Medi-Cal and an injury claim
Received a Medi-Cal Injury Claim Letter?
30-second answer
Keep the whole letter. Check whose injury it concerns and what DHCS is asking for. Share it with your injury lawyer, if you have one. Confirm the next step through the official program. Do not assume a paid medical bill means no repayment is due.

Do this now
- 1Save the letter and envelope. Note when it arrived and any response date.
- 2Check the name, injury date, and DHCS account number. Verify the sender through the official DHCS website before sharing private records.
- 3Send the complete letter to your injury lawyer, if represented. Confirm who will respond and whether DHCS received the claim notice.
- 4Ask for the payment list if an amount is claimed. Mark questions on a separate copy; keep the original unchanged.
- 5Keep proof of each response and case update. Get advice about any unresolved lien before spending settlement funds.
Avoid this
- Do not ignore the letter because Medi-Cal already paid the hospital.
- Do not submit another new case notice just to ask for an update.
- Do not send member numbers or medical files to an unverified address.
Save these
- Letter, envelope, and response dates
- Original notice and proof of receipt
- DHCS account number and case updates
- Payment list and supporting records you lawfully have
- Written questions, answers, and revised lien amounts
- Settlement and final payment or no-lien records
Common questions
Is this the same as a hospital bill?
No. DHCS may seek repayment from an injury recovery for care Medi-Cal paid. A hospital balance is a separate question.
Can I wait until settlement to report the claim?
Do not wait. DHCS directs written notice within 30 days of filing an action or claim, not 30 days from injury. Get advice promptly if notice may be late.
What if the payment list looks wrong?
Identify the provider, date, and entry you question. Keep proof and ask how to submit it for review. Do not assume your own edits reduce the lien.
Does the first letter mean I owe that amount?
Read what it asks. It may only request information. A claimed amount still needs review under the rules that apply to your case.
